And the importance of kindness seems magnified now, in how people portray themselves and in what they are looking for in a partner. In my own dating, I’ve seen more signals of kindness on men’s profiles since the pandemic.
Others offer a less flattering narrative about online dating – ranging from concerns about scams or harassment to the belief that these platforms facilitate superficial relationships rather than meaningful ones. This survey finds that the public is somewhat ambivalent about the overall impact of online dating. Half of Americans believe dating sites and apps have had neither a positive nor negative effect on dating and relationships, while smaller shares think its effect has either been mostly positive (22%) or mostly negative (26%). The study by Thomas, Rosenfeld, and Hausen finds that the share of couples meeting online has just about doubled since 2009.
Our findings suggest that age may be an important variable to consider as investigators continue their efforts to map the terrain of relationships established online. We hope that other researchers will incorporate examinations of age in their studies to provide a fuller understanding of when, how, and why age matters when it comes to matters of the heart initiated and enacted online. In sum, although the observed associations tend to be small to very small in size , the overall pattern of results provides consistent support for Hypothesis 2 over Hypothesis 1. Across the majority of variables we examined, if any association between participant age and online dating activity was observed, the tendency was for involvement in Internet dating via online personals ads to increase—rather than decrease—with age.

Gay rights groups have complained that certain websites that restrict their dating services to heterosexual couples are discriminating against homosexuals. Homosexual customers of the popular eHarmony dating website have made many attempts to litigate discriminatory practices. Online subscription-based services can suffer from complaints about billing practices.
